Dear comrade :

We are appalled at the July 1 storming by a Bangladeshi jihadist group of the Holey Artisan restaurant in the “diplomatic zone” of upscale Ghulshan District of Dhaka, their taking of more than 30 hostages, and their cold-blooded murder of 20 of their hostages before they were overpowered by authorities the next morning.

Their slitting of the throats of their non-Moslem hostages --- including at least 9 Italians, 7 Japanese and a US citizen –- can only be considered as savage and barbaric terrorism. The terrorists also killed two police officers and wounded 30 others.

Terrorism of whatever kind can never have any  justification, and terrorism stemming from religious extremism and the drive for a theocracy should be condemned by everyone.

This terrorist action in Dhaka appears to be a major ecalation of the jihadist attacks in Bangladesh over the past couple of years that had targeted secular rationalists, liberals, foreigners and members of religious minorities. Many of the past attacks have been claimed by the jihadist groups Ansar-al-Islam (which pledged allegiance to “al-Qaeda”) and Jamaat-ul-Mujahideen (which claims to represent the “Islamic State” in Bangladesh).

These international terrorist groups are related to the grand alliance of Islamic extremists which firebombed your party headquarters in Dhaka and nearly killed you and other CPB leaders in that May 2013 attack.

The struggle against international terrorism, represented by “al-Qaeda”, “Islamic State” and other groups which are covertly nurtured and supported by imperialism and their allies, is a prime duty of all peoples throughout the world. In this regard, we express our full solidarity with the people and government of Bangladesh in their war against terrorism.

We hope that the government of Bangladesh will bring to book all those responsible for the terrorist attacks in your country, thwart all efforts to spread violence and anarchy, and restore normalcy at the earliest.

Please extend our deepest condolences to the bereaved families of those heinously murdered by the terrorists, and our sincere wishes for the speedy recovery of those wounded and injured.

                                                                                                                        Very sincerely,

                                                                                                                        ANTONIO  E.  PARIS
